Task 10,0000000000

I would like to compare the book with the movie which was made in 1962. This movie called surprisingly The Miracle Worker was directed by Arthur Penn.
The screenplay is based on the one that was written by W. Gibson and after seeing the movie I can assure you my dear followers that it is strongly upon the scenario.
I really enjoyed the movie because it was absolutely same as the book moreover I just love Anne Bancroft as Annie and Patty Duke as Helen. I think they were both amazing after all they both got Academy Award for their performances. Since I tried to film the last scene I can confirm that it is very difficuil for actresses to play it because it is very emotional and not many words are used....obviously Helen cannot speak.
At the end I did not like the music. I think they should choose something more interesting but as a whole I would definitely watch it again but as a huge fan of books I cannot decide what is better.

Task 9

I feel like I have discussed this task thousand times but anyway for me it is a great true story of a young lady rather than an awesome play. It is a story of a human determination to change the world, and yes communication meant the world to Helen Keller.
At the beginning of the book Annie’s teacher, Anagnos, described Helen as “a little save, locked, that no one can open but perhaps there is a treasure inside” (18) and he was right. Helen was full of ideas and thoughts but she could not express them.
Before Annie’s arrivals Helen was behaving really nasty and because of that Annie called her a devil. (31) On the other hand Helen was extraordinary smart and foxy despite her handicap.
Another obstacle in learning was surprisingly her mother who “kept her-like a pet” and was pity for her. Her mother loved her so much that she let her do everything she wanted. (75). I agree that her mother was too caring. She should be stronger.
In the isolation Annie spells Helen some things that she likes for example D, o, l, l or C, a, k, e she repeats it but she is unable to understand that she can communicate through those signs.
At the end Helen is coming back home, suddenly, everything she has learned she somehow forgot. She started to behave badly again. Annie sees it and she is really mad and angry. She grabs her and drags her to the water pump where Helen finally understands that water is this special liquid coming from the pump.

Task 8: Reviewing...

While I was searching for some reviews I could possibly use in this post I came across a sentence that was published at www.backstage.com and said by Erik Haagensen "I've never been sure if William Gibson wrote a great play or merely an expert telling of a great story." I partially agree that The Miracle Worker is so extraordinary because of the great story but W. Gibson is at least a decent writer.
The play itself is very easy to follow. W. Gibson uses many mataphores and alliterations such as "How does a bird learn to fly? We're born to use words, like wings, it has to come,". In my opinion it sounds very pretty however it is said by Annie who is 20 years old girl so it does not really fit.
As another reviewer, I really enjoyed stage directions because it reminds me a prose and I like prose. Despite the fact that both leading actresses were awarded by an Academy Awards some scenes are better on paper then on screan, expecially those that are deeply emotional and soulful.
William Gibson might not be the best writer ever but his piece si vivid and readable, connecting these qualities with the great story of Annie and Hellen makes this play special.

Protagonist/Antagonist

This post I would like to start with definitions of Protagonist and Antagonist becuase it is important to know the difference between those two.

Protagonist: The main character in a drama or other literary work with whom we usually symphatize.
Antagonist: The principal character in opposition to the protagonist or hero of a narrative or drama.

The play The Miracle Worker has two main leading characters Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. I put their names in two different colours in purpose because they can be interpreted either ways but I can also claim that there is neither an antagonist nor a protagonist.

Some people may say that Annie Sullivan is the protagonist because she tries really hard to educate a spoilt, hadicaped children. Annie does it at her family request but then her attitude transform into a pure determination.
Nevertheless sometimes she uses very hard methods including separation from her family so we feel compassion with Helen and this pushes her into a position of protagonist.

In my opinion there is no antagonist or protagonist. The play is based on their interactions. Sometimes they fight and have disputes but on the other hand it all ends happily without any hurt person.

William Gibson

William Gibson was born in the Bronx (NY) in 1914. His first significant play was called Two for the Seesaw introduced on Broadway in 1958 however it was The Miracle Worker, for which he is best known.
Gibson was fascinated by Annie Sullivan and her success with Helen Keller. He wanted to write The Miracle Worker as a solo dance piece but he changed his mind and it firstly appeared as a television play on CBS. After a warm acceptance he got an offer to adapt the play for stage and film.
In my opinion the story of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller is really absorbing and inspiring and that is why it deserved being on stage. People are enthralled by others, their different ways of living and different human natures. William Gibson did a great job which may have influenced many people with some handicap.

Themes

In this article I would like to indicate some of the major themes that occur in the play.
Firstly the strory is not difficuil or flowery. There are no epic scenes. On the other hand it highlights the importance of human communication and expression. Those things play significant role in our lifes moreover if we cannot fully express who we are we will never be happy and satisfied. Helen used to be a spoilt child with no goal but then suddenly a miracle happened and she was able to use all her hidden potecial.
The miracle presents the change which Helen undergoes in the process of learning. The change of her perception of the world is really amazing. If it was not for Annie it all should have ended differently. Annies  determination helped to transfom Helen into a brand new lady. After all fights and disputes they went through at the end Annie says: 'I, love, Helen. Forever, and-ever.'

WAH WAH

The play The Miracle Worker is divided into three acts and I must admit I have already read the whole play so I cannot expect what will happen but anyway here is the plot. :-)

Act I
As I already mantioned the beginning of The Miracle Worker I will continue with events that happend after Annie's arrival. Immediately after that Annie gets to work. She is not very succesful.Whenever Helen wants something she spells it to her hand. They begin with DOLL and CAKE. Unfortunately Helen is used to the reality that she gets everything without any trouble so she gets bored with the spelling. She hits Annie with the doll and lockc her. Annie is rescued through a window and a ladder. After all Helen drops the key to the well. Annie sees it but is leaving with a smile.

Act II
Act II beggins at Annie's rooms where Helen is again destroying things but each of them is spelled out into her hand. While Annie is trying to explain Kate that firstly Helen has to understand what a word is and then she can learn what spelling is.
Next morning during the breakfast Helen is fooling around, behaving badly. Annie cannot stand it and strikes out an dispute. She sends everybody away. After lot of fightings she wins. The result is that Helen finally uses a spoon and she even folds her napkin.
This succes is not everlasting because Captain does not like the unconventional way of Annie's acting. Eventually they make a deal. Annie could take Helen for one week. She wants total isolation in purpose to make Helen dependent on her.So they drive her around to confuse her and take her to the garden house. Helen is angry, not letting Annie touch so she spells something into servants hand. Helen starts to trust her again, falling asleep.

Act III
The week of separation is almost over and Helen still does not know the true meaning of those signs however she has learnt some of them. Annie is really frustrated and demands more time but the family is so excited to have Helen back home that they do not allow it.
Coming back home means coming back to the old behaviour. Everything Helen has learnt is endangered. Helen hits Annie by a pitcher of water. Annie is really pissed off. She grabs her and drags her to the water pump, spelling water into her plam. A miracle is happening now because Helen finally finds out the magic of spelling and the fact that everything has a name.
